MBTA hands out Dunkin’ gift cards after Orange Line shutdown https://cadeauwinkel.net/mbta-hands-out-dunkin-gift-cards-after-orange-line-shutdown/ Mon, 19 Sep 2022 12:06:57 +0000 https://cadeauwinkel.net/mbta-hands-out-dunkin-gift-cards-after-orange-line-shutdown/

BOSTON, MA — The Orange Line came back to life Monday morning, resuming service after 30 days of transit disruptions due to its month-long shutdown.

With some headaches gone but frustrations lingering, the MBTA said Monday morning that its staff would hand out $5 Dunkin’ gift cards at “select Orange Line stations” as a token of appreciation to passengers.

The T did not specify the stations where it would distribute these cards.

He nonetheless thanked the runners for their patience over the past month.

“To our Orange Line passengers, thank you for your support as we worked towards #BuildingABetterT,” the agency wrote in a post on Twitter.

MBTA chief executive Steve Poftak discussed the shutdown last week, noting the work done to date. He said he and other agency staff hoped passengers would return to what has been the Orange Line network’s second-busiest subway line.

Largely new cars are running throughout the Orange Line system as some riders return to trains. This is after the MBTA said it had exceeded shutdown targets when integrating the cars. The upgrades will lead to a cleaner and more enjoyable ride, officials say, as the MBTA largely does away with its familiar but outdated old Orange Line cars.

Some passengers braced themselves for possible setbacks when the orange line returned to service on Monday. As of 8 a.m., no such major issues had been reported, according to the T.

“Slow Zones” remain in effect along the route of the Orange Line despite maintenance work, however resulting in a creepy ride in some places. While these speed restrictions are set to expire in the coming days, the MBTA confirmed over the weekend that they will temporarily remain in place to allow lane inspections and allow the lanes themselves to settle on a new ballast material.

Apart from the infrastructure, the orange line has resumed service at a reduced frequency of trains compared to normal levels.

The T reduced service on its subway lines over the summer due to staffing issues at its operations control center and has since extended those reductions, impacting the Orange line.

While Orange Line riders are noting their line’s return to service this week, the Green Line is back in operation after a near-simultaneous partial shutdown of stops between Government Center and Union Square over the past month.

Local man allegedly swindled store out of $1,500 in gift cards and merchandise – The Globe https://cadeauwinkel.net/local-man-allegedly-swindled-store-out-of-1500-in-gift-cards-and-merchandise-the-globe/ Tue, 17 May 2022 11:49:00 +0000 https://cadeauwinkel.net/local-man-allegedly-swindled-store-out-of-1500-in-gift-cards-and-merchandise-the-globe/

WORTHINGTON — Nobles County Fifth District Court has issued a subpoena to San Isidro Guerrero Rocha, Jr., 40, of Worthington, to appear on the charge of felony-level theft without consent.

The charge stems from multiple incidents between Jan. 25 and April 28, in which Rocha allegedly took more than $1,500 in merchandise and Walmart gift cards.

A Worthington police officer was dispatched to Walmart on May 1 for a reported theft and met with an asset protection employee. During the conversation, the agent reviewed store reports showing that on January 25, Rocha entered the store with a few items in her basket and went to customer service, where a food saver was exchange. Rocha then selected a 55-inch television and walked through a checkout lane, where he paid for a pack of cigarettes and told the cashier he had paid for the television in the electronics department. Rocha left the store without paying for the TV, which was valued at $319.

On March 1, Rocha walked into Walmart again and vacuumed customer service in an attempt to return it. The return was refused because the vacuum cleaner was not shown as sold. Rocha left the store with the vacuum cleaner and returned a few minutes later, selecting a toaster oven and blender. He took the two unpaid items to customer service and exchanged them for a $448 gift card.

On March 3, cameras showed Rocha returning to Walmart and selecting two FoodSaver-branded items. He took the unpaid merchandise directly to the customer service counter and returned the unpaid merchandise for a $278 gift card.

Then, on April 28, cameras showed Rocha returning to the store with a woman, selecting an electric pressure cooker and carpet cleaner, and not attempting to pay for the items in the cart. The stolen items were valued at $466.

Asset Protection investigated the matter and learned that the woman was Patrice Rocha, wife of San Isidro. A social media search confirmed the identity of San Isidro Guerrero Rocha Jr. on the store video.

The total value of the stolen or fraudulently returned items for gift cards was $1,511.

The WPD officer compared surveillance footage with a recent booking photo and believed the individual to be Rocha.

Attempts have been made to speak with Rocha at his last known address, but he has not yet been located.

If Rocha appears in court, he faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

Is Walmart giving away $750 Facebook gift cards for its 60th birthday? https://cadeauwinkel.net/is-walmart-giving-away-750-facebook-gift-cards-for-its-60th-birthday/ Mon, 02 May 2022 23:52:53 +0000 https://cadeauwinkel.net/is-walmart-giving-away-750-facebook-gift-cards-for-its-60th-birthday/

Walmart is giving away $750 gift cards on Facebook to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The context

The Facebook scams promised $750 gift cards to complete surveys on lilith.deals and other sketchy websites not run by Walmart. At the same time, completely separate from the Facebook scams, was a legitimate giveaway operated by Walmart.com which, as of early 2022, was giving away $80,000 in gift cards every quarter.

Fact check

On May 2, 2022, a tip from a reader led us to a Facebook swindle which promised $750 walmart gift cards for the company’s 60th anniversary. The scam appeared in posts as paid ads on the social media platform. They were hosted by a page named Giant Rewards. The ads led to fraudulent surveys on a website named lilith.deals. It was not an official gift handled by Walmart.

It was a scam. A check of the Facebook page’s ad library showed it was managed in both the US and Ukraine with several announcements:

A Facebook scam claimed that Walmart was giving away $750 gift cards for its 60th birthday.
These were several of the other ads we found running in early May 2022. (Source: Facebook)

We’ve already reported on a number of other scams that also involved Walmart and Facebook (and some that included the company’s 60th anniversary), including one that claimed KitchenAid mixers cost $2. We also found tracks of a Walmart scam, also on Facebook, that Instant Pot products were priced at $2.

Facebook scams page posted about some of these 60th birthday scams, saying they mentioned stores like Walmart, Argos and others. Some of the screenshots of the page’s posts showed that another scam involved the allegation that Walmart was giving away TVs for $2, which was not true.

According to Scam Stoppers, these scams could all be part of a strategy to trick users into signing up for a subscription service without realizing it. Some users have also reported receiving telemarketing calls immediately after filling out their information.

In short, no Walmart isn’t giving away $750 gift cards for its 60th birthday via a sketchy Facebook page. We recommend avoiding giveaways on Facebook unless the page managing it has a blue and white verified badge.

Note: Besides these Facebook scams, one thing that might surprise some of our readers is that in early 2022, Walmart was legitimately giving away $80,000 in gift cards every three months. As part of one of our previous fact checks, we looked at the very real email surveys that Walmart sent to their customers after they made a purchase. “Win one of five $1,000 Walmart gift cards or one of 750 $100 Walmart gift cards,” the giveaway said. It was all genuine. All indications on Walmart.com showed that it was something the company did quarterly.
